Reviewing Math Mammoth (Parent Reviewer: Sommer XIA, a mother of three children who lives in Midwest of the United States)
Since our second child entered the second grade last year, we chose to use Math Mammoth as the main mathematics textbook. We have now completed the learning task for a whole school year. In this process, I reflected from three perspectives: myself as a guide and family teacher, the child as a learner, and the comparison with other textbooks we have used. 自从我们家老二去年进入二年级起，我们选择使用 Math Mammoth 作为主要的数学教材。目前已完整完成一整个学年的学习任务。在这个过程中，我从三个角度进行反思：作为引导者和家庭教师的我、作为学习者的孩子本人、以及与其他我们使用过的教材的比较。
1. As a guide for family education: Math Mammoth is a highly self-learning friendly teaching material 作为家庭教育的引导者：Math Mammoth 是一套高度自学友好型教材
For me, the biggest advantage of Math Mammoth is that it requires little preparation. It is structured so that children can complete daily learning tasks completely independently. Each chapter begins with a concise and clear “teaching example” followed by exercises around that math concept. This arrangement greatly reduces the burden of daily preparation for me. 对我来说，Math Mammoth 最大的优点在于它对教学者准备要求极低。它的结构设计使得孩子可以完全独立完成每天的学习任务。每一章以简洁明了的“教学示例”开头，接着是围绕该知识点安排的练习。这样的编排方式极大地降低了我在每日前期准备上的负担。
Throughout the school year, we adopted a mastery-based learning method, that is, we learned and mastered each concept before moving on to the next one. This structure just suits my second child’s learning habit and personality characteristics (he is very focused and logical). Of course, when he encounters greater difficulties in a certain chapter, I will also temporarily adjust to a “spiral manner”, first study the next unit, and then go back to consolidate the stuck content. In daily teaching, my main role is an assistant: the study time (on Math Mammoth) is about twenty minutes every day. After the second child completes the content independently, I am responsible for checking the exercises with him to understand his mastery of the knowledge so as to adjust the progress in time. 在日常教学中，我的主要角色是辅助者：每天学习时间约二十分钟，老二独立完成内容后，我负责与他一起检查练习，从中了解他的掌握情况，以便及时调整进度。
The syllabus at the beginning of the textbook is also very helpful to me. I will carefully read the introduction and chapter arrangement at the beginning of the school year, which helps me to be flexible and adjust the pace when I encounter bottlenecks in my children. 教材开头的教学大纲对我帮助也很大。我会在学年初认真阅读前言及章节安排，这有助于我在遇到孩子瓶颈期时能灵活应变、调整节奏。
In Summary: Math Mammoth is suitable for children with the drive of learning, and is also suitable as an after-school program and extension teaching material for school students. 2. From the child’s perspective: It is easy to understand. It could be completed independently. It has a certain degree of challenge. 从孩子的角度：理解性强、可独立完成、有一定挑战性。
Our second child gave positive feedback on this textbook. He said: “I like this textbook because it is easy to understand and I can complete it independently. The exercises are simple but challenging, and I feel a sense of accomplishment when I solve the difficult problems.” 我们家老二对这套教材的反馈是积极的。他说： “我喜欢这本教材因为它很容易理解，我自己可以独立完成。而且练习虽然简单，但也有挑战性，解决难题让我很有成就感。”
Of course, he also expressed some dissatisfaction: “Sometimes my mother asked me to do two chapters (it is too much), and I would feel very tired. Also, when I got stuck, my mother didn’t tell me the answer directly, but asked me to figure it out myself. I didn’t like it very much.” 当然，他也表达了一些不满： “有时候妈妈让我做两章太多了，我会觉得很累。还有我卡住的时候，妈妈不直接告诉我答案，而是让我自己想办法，我不太喜欢这样。”

3. Comparison with other textbooks regarding the preparation time, content depth, and cost 与其他教材对比：准备时间、内容深度、成本各有千秋
We have also used RightStart Math and Primary Mathematics (Singapore Mathematics) before. For comparison: 我们此前还使用过 RightStart Math 和 Primary Mathematics（新加坡数学）。对比来看：
Preparation time: RightStart Math requires parents to invest a lot of time in preparing teaching aids and participating in game interactions, which is the most time-consuming. Primary Mathematics teaching materials are divided into textbooks and workbooks, and the preparation time is medium. Math Mammoth is the most time-saving and basically does not require additional teaching aids. It is suitable for home learning or for families with limited parental time. 准备时间： RightStart Math 要求家长投入大量时间准备教具和参与游戏互动，是最耗时的。Primary Mathematics 教材分为 textbook 和 workbook，准备量居中。Math Mammoth 最省时，基本不需额外教具，适合自学或家长时间有限的家庭。
Learning pace: RightStart is more focused on “making mathematics life-like”, with slow pace but very fun. Primary Math has a fast pace, and my second child completed a whole year’s worth of content in just a few months in the first grade. Math Mammoth is more suitable for “slow and steady” in-depth learning, and each concept is explored solidly. 学习节奏： RightStart 更偏重“数学生活化”，节奏慢但趣味性强。 Primary Math 节奏快，老二在一年级几个月内就完成了一整年的内容。Math Mammoth 更适合“细水长流”型的深入学习，每个知识点都挖掘得很扎实。
Cost comparison (data from 2025): RightStart Math is the most expensive, Primary Mathematics is in the middle, and Math Mammoth is the cheapest, making it a cost-effective choice. 成本比较（2025年数据）： RightStart Math 最贵， Primary Mathematics 居中， Math Mammoth 最便宜，是非常高性价比的选择。
I have not yet had the opportunity to use multiple sets of textbooks in the same school year to conduct an in-depth comparison of the content, because there is a three-year age difference between the second and third children, so parallel testing is not possible for the time being. From the overall experience, the content arrangement, rhythm and difficulty of Math Mammoth are suitable for our family’s current needs. 目前我尚未有机会在同一学年内同步使用多套教材进行内容深度比较，因老二和老三之间相差三岁，暂时无法进行平行测试。但从整体使用体验来看，Math Mammoth 的内容安排、节奏和难度都非常适合我们家庭目前的需求。
4. Future Plans. Considering our familiarity with this set of textbooks and its good fit with our second child’s characteristics, we plan to continue using Math Mammoth in the third grade. I am very glad that I chose this set of textbooks when my second child was in the second grade, and I look forward to it continuing to lay a solid foundation for our math learning. 总结: Math Mammoth 是一套结构清晰、适合自学、兼顾挑战与成就感的数学教材。它对家庭教育尤其友好，能够帮助孩子打牢基础、循序渐进地掌握数学核心概念。我很庆幸在老二二年级阶段选择了这套教材，也期待接下来它继续为我们的数学学习打下坚实的基础。
